A Rocky Yet Relaxing Retreat: Kenney's Beach in Southold

On my recent adventure of exploring the North Fork of Long Island, I discovered Kenney’s Beach in Southold. This visit to Kenney’s Beach was a refreshing change, offering a quieter, more intimate beach experience that I hadn't encountered in New Jersey (where I previously lived) before.

Kenney’s Beach contrasts the more crowded beaches I was accustomed to in New Jersey. Unlike the vast sands of the Jersey Shore, Kenney’s Beach is smaller in size, creating an intimate atmosphere that’s perfect for a peaceful day by the water.

One major difference is the rocky sands. The beach is covered with smooth, rounded stones both on the shore and in the shallow waters. While the rocks might not be ideal for those who prefer a soft, sandy surface, they do add a certain charm to the setting like you're on an island. The rocky beach also means that you might need to bring water shoes if you’re planning to swim in the water. I didn’t enjoy the rocks and prefer the soft sand in New Jersey.

Location-wise, Kenney’s Beach is located along the Long Island Sound, which differs from the Atlantic Ocean that lines New Jersey’s coast. The waters here are notably calmer and gentler, with small waves that are ideal for a relaxed swim. The Long Island Sound provides a more sheltered environment, so the water is often clearer and the waves are less intense. It’s a great choice for families with small children or anyone who prefers a quieter swimming experience. The peaceful sound of the small waves creates a calm atmosphere that’s hard to find at busier beaches. Additionally, this beach only had two lifeguards whereas New Jersey beaches have many. This was sufficient though because the area to watch was so small.

Though the beach wasn’t crowded during my visit, a few families were enjoying the beach. The families were scattered enough to ensure that everyone had their own space, yet the occasional sound of children playing in the background contributed to the overall pleasant atmosphere. They were either playing in the sand or trying to skip rocks along the water. I highly enjoyed this atmosphere because it felt very private due to all the space I had. In New Jersey, you can always count on someone to sit right next to you.

In terms of facilities, Kenney’s Beach had a small building for restrooms. There was no boardwalk or any convenience store nearby. Although, they did have a restaurant called “Little Fish” within walking distance that was crowded - it is definitely on my list to come back to.

In summary, Kenney’s Beach in Southold may not have the expansive sands or big waves of New Jersey beaches, but it offers a unique charm with its rocky shoreline and calm waters. For those seeking a peaceful trip with a family-friendly environment, Kenney’s Beach is a perfect destination. The experience left me feeling relaxed and refreshed, with an appreciation for the quieter side of beach life.
