Fresh Finds: Southold Fish Market
Located in the heart of Southold is Southold’s Fish Market. This is a must-visit destination for seafood enthusiasts like myself. This market offers a unique experience as it has fresh seafood and the option to eat meals cooked inside the market.
Upon arriving at Southold Fish Market, I was immediately drawn to its setup. The market features both indoor and outdoor seating options. At first, I was confused as to why there was seating at a fish market, but once entering the store I was surprised to see they had a dine-in section. One side of the market is dedicated to showcasing their impressive array of seafood, displayed on ice to highlight their freshness. Meanwhile, the other side houses a menu where customers can place orders and have their food called out when ready, providing a casual yet efficient dining experience. There is also a small bar area, where customers are served by a bartender, which makes this fish market one of the most unique markets I've been to.
The variety at Southold Fish Market was impressive, ranging from whole fish, scallops, shrimp, lobster, oysters, clams, and pre-made dishes like seafood soups, shrimp cocktails, and seafood salads. After browsing around, I had someone from the market help me in picking out some fresh cod, clams, and smoked salmon to take home.
What impressed me most about Southold Fish Market was its commitment to freshness. They displayed fish caught early that morning, ensuring that every customer received seafood of the highest quality. I will no longer be buying my seafood from Shoprite!
That evening, I decided to prepare a dinner of fish tacos using the cod I bought. I baked the cod in the oven with just a simple seasoning of salt, pepper, and chili powder. I assembled the tacos with avocado slices, rice, crunchy coleslaw, fresh cilantro, a squeeze of lime, and a dollop of sour cream, all wrapped in warm corn tortillas. The cod was incredibly fresh and flaky, making each bite a burst of delicious juiciness.
The clams I purchased were conveniently pre-made, so I baked them in the oven until they were heated through. They were topped with breadcrumbs and chopped bacon which added savoriness to the fresh fish.
The following morning, I decided to recreate a breakfast inspired by my recent visit to The Halyard Restaurant: smoked salmon avocado toast. The smoked salmon from Southold Fish Market was flavorful, almost having the same quality I had experienced at the restaurant. I had toasted ciabatta bread topped with a creamy avocado spread, smoked salmon, and some seasonings. This is now my current fixation. Although delicious it is pricey as a pound of smoked salmon from Southold Fish Market is $28.99.
While my visit to Southold Fish Market was focused on bringing home fresh seafood to cook, I am excited to go back to explore their in-house menu further. Whether you're looking to cook seafood at home or enjoy freshly prepared dishes in a casual dining setting, Southold Fish Market is the place to go.
